Stranded in Asia without any money? What to do!

An old joke.
Telegram to dad; “No mon, no fun, your son”.
Reply to son; “so sad, too bad, your dad”.
Go to your embassy sounds like a good answer but you will be surprised how little help they will actually give you unless it is an emergency, and the embassies generally do not consider you being out of money an emergency.
Be like the Boy Scouts and be prepared!
Before I travel I scan my passport, visas in passport that I will need on the trip, if I get them before travel, credit cards, drivers license, and travelers checks with the receipt that shows all of the numbers of the checks. I make sure to include a list of important phone numbers that will respond 24-7.
I create or use an email account with Yahoo, G-mail, Hot Mail or an email account that I know that I can get into from the Internet anywhere in the world. I upload a file that has all of the scans in the file. I name the file something innocent that you can remember like fluff's photos or mom and dads anniversary pictures.

I also have some one lined up that I can call and have them wire me money, which by the way is what the US embassy will tell you to do again, unless it is a emergency being that you are in physical danger or so incapacitated that you cannot help your self IE in a hospital because of a crash and you lost your passport and ID in the process. They are not going to be very supportive, much to many peoples surprise, when they go to a embassy in a situation where they lost their travel funds, however it may happen, be it stolen out of a cheap hotel, you were swindled in a airport, or just plain lost the darn things.
Some hotels will be sympathetic and help you get a phone call to your people. They can sometimes give you a room and some emergency pocket money if they can secure a credit card authorization from a friend or relative. The hotel can also if you stayed there all ready verify who you are, if they have your passport information written down, which in many countries they are required to do by local law. This is important as the embassy will not do anything for you till they can prove who you are, which slows down the process for instance if you need to get a new passport.
If not there is always the old fall back of washing car windows and panhandling.
We have found that using the two programs below that we were consistently finding the best deals on discount hotels, the cheapest rooms and budget guesthouses, if there was not a special on the hotels direct site. Hotels Combined search's 30 different hotel booking sites and points out the best rate and Rates to Go offers last minute deals if you are booking at the last minute. Chuck
