Learn Scuba Diving Easy

Start with Snorkeling and Free Diving!

One of the things that I have seen many times is the ease of teaching new scuba divers in Asia is that student divers that have a lot of experience as snorkelers, and for those student divers that have free diving experience, teaching them to dive is even easier.

There are a few reasons why this is so, but the biggest by far is that they are not afraid of deep water; and by deep water, I mean water that you can not stand up in.  Deep water really has no difference in regards to depth, sure it might be a little colder and things like currents and waves might act a little differently, but psychologically there is really no difference once you can not touch the bottom, be it 7 feet, or 1000 feet, once you are comfortable as a snorkeler, or a free diver, the depth doesn’t matter to you anymore once you are comfortable that you can get to and stay at the surface for as long as you want.

The next biggest reason is comfort with the mask.  I have seen many scuba instructors in Asia that don’t really do a good job on this part of a scuba diving course and many of these divers will be hobbled and many of them will drop out of scuba diving all together, because the instructor failed them in this fundamental area that is so important to there feeling completely comfortable in the water.

Comfort for new divers starts with the mask which starts with the correct way to put the mask on. To begin to put the mask on you need to make sure that all of the hair is out of the mask. Then place the mask on the face making sure that the mask is seated correctly and then pull the strap to the fat part of the back of the head check that the ears are uncovered and that there are no folds or wrinkles in the mask skirt.

For women and long hair men having a comfort strap on the mask is also a way to make them more comfortable as they are not pulling their hair when they are putting the mask on, and taking the mask off.

Another thing that will cause discomfort is to have the mask straps too tight, which is a sure sign that they have not been instructed correctly.  The water will hold the mask on once they are submerged. The secret is to have the mask snug against the face, not tight against the face.  A good way to check is if they are wearing the mask for a while and they take the mask off and you can see grooves where the mask was, it is way to tight, and this is also uncomfortable. Again, make sure that the ears also are not covered; this can also be a nagging discomfort in the water.

Learn to Dive PADI

With free divers they are easier to teach as they probably all ready know about clearing the ears on decent. This is a major teaching point in the scuba diving course regardless of if it is PADI, SSI, BSAC or YMCA.  Once you get to around 1.5 to 2.5 meters underwater, the pressure between your internal airspaces in your ears and the ambient water pressure is great enough to cause pain and even rupture the ear, which is very bad and can cause a diver to stop diving for at least 6 weeks and for some forever unless they go for a operation!

Many student divers are so aware of this that they go over board in anticipation of clearing the ears and try to clear repeatedly even when they don’t need to clear and cause the ears to become swollen, and make clearing the ears hard to impossible.

Some people also by nature have very hard to clear ears, but someone who is a free diver that is use to going deeper than say 4 meters, has done this procedure many times in the past, this process is for many of them second nature all ready, and not an issue that you will need to spend any time on to make them proficient in clearing of the ears. There is an exception to this and that is people who clear very easy and for them they might just need to swallow and clear but they are relatively rare.

If you are going to learn scuba diving and you are nervous and want the process to be easier, learn to snorkel and free dive first which leads to more comfort and confidence in the water and will make the dive course so much easier for you.
