Asia Diving, Doing It For Less.

What is the best way to save money on Asia Diving? Many people love to scuba dive in Asia, but they cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars on it. What you need to do first is to actually look at what you have spent on previous trips. Seeing where the money is going will show you where you can make changes to your budget to maximize you travel budget.
The best way to do this is to have a budget and then record everything that you spent money on from the time that you left your house to the time that you get back; you might be surprised at how small of a percentage the actual Asian diving was! One of the ways you can back track is to look at what you spent on your credit cards. If you are like most people you will put the big stuff on the cards and pay cash for the small stuff. The credit card purchases themselves are a way for you to save money, as most major credit cards charge an international transaction fee, and then many merchants in Asia also charge you a transaction fee, so you could be paying as much as 6% more on those large foreign purchases, something to really think about.

One way to avoid this is to book in advance and pay direct to a USA account, if they have one. Another is bringing cash and pay when you get there. Talk to the vendor and see if they will take dollars and if they will give you a fair rate, many will give you rates that are way off, and profit off of you. When I owned the dive company in Cambodia, we would always take other currencies and give them a fair rate. Many customers would pay with left over Thai baht which we could always use, as well as US dollars and Japanese yen. For us as the vendor, we would save on the foreign exchange later, so we could give a fair rate and benefit from the flexibility of dealing with our vendors in their preferred currency. We could also use it for our own international travel and for dive & travel trade shows.

Dive groups always will get special pricing that will make for a more budget minded trip. The dive shops and live-a-boards knowing that they have a big group can take a little less profit in exchange for a full trip and dive groups will generally stay longer, so they make there profit on the volume and full calendar.
One of the places that you will find that you spend a lot of your dive budget is on hotels. In Bali which has some of the best cheap diving in Asia, you can find Spartan Bali cheap hotels for as low as $7 a night in Ubud Kuta and Tulamben, and some will even include breakfast. On the other hand, many people traveling to Bali will pay over $30 a night with some spending over $200 a night to stay in Sanur Beach or Seminyak, so you can see that there is a huge difference from the cheapest hotels to the luxury hotels. On dive trips you sleep eat and dive, you normally don’t want to spend a lot of time in the accommodations. These kinds of price ranges for hotels and guesthouses differences are in most places that offer diving so it really pays to do your research on this budget item.
Another place that you can save money is on your gear rental but this is a tricky one as many shops will include it into their dive packages if you go to an area that has a lot of beginners. Advanced divers it is pretty much a given that they will bring their own dive equipment, so checking that before you get there is a good idea. Another consideration is over weight charges on the small cheaper flights in Asia. 20 Kilos is the max on many of the Asian cheapest airlines and some are even now using 15 kilos and the over weight charges on these Asia cheapest flights can easily wipe out any savings from bringing your own dive gear.
