Waikiki hotels can be very expensive For really cheap Waikiki Hotels the trick is when you are reserving a hotel room find out how far from the water the hotel is, generally the farther from the beach, the cheaper the hotels. Also a good strategies is to book vacation package tours that include all of the islands that you want to see. I personally love all of the Hawaiian islands they all have their own personalities. Maui more for the honeymooners Kauai is great for nature fiends. The Big Island the best general Scuba Diving in Hawaii Waikiki Honolulu and Oahu are all basically all the same thing with everything and more that you can find on the other islands. If you have the time and the money Molokai and Lanai are spectacular in their own ways as well.

If you are looking for a benchmark we would suggest you first check the Outrigger chain as they have rooms all through out Waikiki and Hawaii and many of the properties are budget priced they also control some of the luxury 5 stars so watch the prices and locations to get a feel for the value that you and your budget are comfortable with.
Waikiki beach is around 2 miles long more or less and most of the budget accommodations are not going to be on the beach as that is what people will pay more for, the better view the higher the price. The best deals on hotels will be around 3 blocks from the water between the Ala Wai canal and the ocean front. There is nothing wrong with these locations if you are looking to get the best prices. We have found that closer to the zoo you will find better rooms and prices. If you are going to be there for a while like 2 weeks or more you can also look at renting a small serviced apartment or condo this will probably get you a better view and better price and possibly more amenities like cooking facilities which can save you a ton of money as well as nicer tv's and more storage space and balconies.
In Waikiki you can find anything that you need. There are many travel agents that can get you to anywhere that you want to go. Something to keep in mind is not to book anything but the travel as you will be paying more money that you should. The closer you get to the destination the cheaper the prices become. Some things are cheaper though if you book PADI Scuba Diving online you can ask for and get better rates from some dive centers in Waikiki
