Chinese Street Food, Double dare you!
You just bit into something and you can't quite figure out what it is and you say to your self do I really need to know what it was that I just ate because it looked like a shrimp but tasted like crunchy mash potatoes and then you see the pile of grasshoppers waiting for the pot that your plate just came from and you smile remembering back to playing double dare you as a kid only this time its China Style!.
When traveling for most people taking in the local fare is one of the main attractions. In China this can be a bit daunting as they will eat most anything including their treasured delicacies of crunchy and not so crunchy bugs, bird's nests soups and serpent intestines. China is just opening up to self directed tourists, so on the street you don't get a lot of English spoken yet, and besides charades (which you might want to note to take the guy that lived in Asia first on your team at the next Christmas party) and blurry picture menus, most of the time you are in the dark when ordering. Pointing and praying is the order of the day, and most of the time it tastes great.
Playing Stickman! We loved the Chinese version of stickman, they do the usual meats that you find in Asia usually beef, pork or chicken, with a cube of fruit for taste. The Chinese also do corn on the cob, but the best is the breaded chicken that is to die for, (maybe a poor choice of words) that is delicious! You can walk into any convenience store and play stickman as well with lots of stuff simmering on the counters. Playing stickman is a great way to stretch your travel budget as the cost is nominal at 1 to 2.5 Yuan for most of the different sticks. 2.5 Yuan at today's foreign exchange rates converts to .25 USD
Witches Caldrons on the street you will see big pots of steaming hissing bubbling brown liquids that contain soups which in my humble opinion should be marketed as the great mystery meals of the orient, when you get soup on the street you can bite into to some stuff that will have your mouth wondering if it your have lost your mind that you would make it process the stuff, to be sure most tastes like chicken but some tastes I don't know and maybe I really don't want to know if I want to sleep at night. There is something though about those caldrons that enhance the flavors the only problem is describing them.
