Finding cheap flights to Bali Indonesia is not easy; they seem to charge a premium to go to Jakarta or Bali. Cheap airfares to Surabaya were also hard to find, however once you are in Indonesia the flights are cheaper and there are a lot of flights available. You still need to look for the discount flights to get really good deals. Air Asia seems to have the least expensive in general but if you look at some of the other carriers you can still find bargain airfares. Some of the other budget airlines are Sriwyaya Air , Adam Air, Mandala Air and Goruda Air were both asking a lot more, at least 25% or more. the best prices for cheap flights to Bali forom Singapore KL and Bangkok is Lion Air the really cheap flights around $150 USD now July 2008 to & from Singapore.
If you have a lot of luggage it can cost you a lot on some of the airlines. Air Asia has a 15 kilo limit then they put everything you have on the scale including your carry on and it is 20,000 a kilo for the overage. Sriwyaja only charged 10,000 pr kilo and they did not weigh my computer which is 7 kilo, which on Air Asia would have added 15 USD to the total price of the ticket.
I believe that good things should be rewarded When I got on the Sriwyaja flight I asked if I could get coffee they said sorry we don’t serve coffee. I asked them if they have hot water, they said yes, I normally keep some Nescafe in my computer bag today I did not have any in there but the beautiful stewardess came to my seat after the flight took off with a cup of coffee! You have to love that kind of service!
At the very last minute I booked a ferry from Singapore to Batam just across from Singapore in Indonesia and it cost me $29.90 Singapore dollars for the ferry and then $51.80 for the flight to Jakarta. The airport tax was 30,000 Rupia just a little bit over $3 USD. So for trading two hours and taking the ferry I saved nearly $80 USD, not bad and I did it all of the fly with no reservations.
The original plan was to take the frery from Batam to Jakarta, and then take a night train to the end of the island of Java, then catch a ferry and a 1st class bus to Denpasar, the main tourist area of Bali. I was figuring that the whole trip would take maybe 3 or 4 days. When I got to Batam they said that I would need to wait two days until the ferry left, and then the ferry would take 26 hours and I would get into Jakarta after the night train had all ready left, so it would be another wasted day, so the flight from Batam to Jakarta was a great deal all the way around.
I searched flights from Bangkok and Singapore to see if there were any deals to be had on cheap flights to Bali or Jakarta and all I could find were around 150 USD or more one way. I like taking trains and buses are ok if they have bathrooms and the aircon works but when you start to get in to distances that are over 1500 KM you start to really eat the time that you have available.
