Indonesia Trains Jakarta to Bali
No sleeper they have executive class and business class they say this Indonesian train is a sleeper but it is more like a 1st class bus. The seats only could recline about 4 inch's yet they could have had them go back a lot further they had the room. There was no higher class than the Executive class so you are stuck trying to sleep sitting up which for most people makes for a not so good sleep compared to a real sleeper where you can stretch full out.
The price was ok for a 11 hour trip it was less than $25 at 230,000 Rupees which at the time of this writing the foreign exchange rate was 9266 rupiahs to the US Dollars. On the trip they also serve you a free meal I had the beef and it was not so bad with some vegetables with a brown gravy they also had fried rice as another option. In the Morning you could order breakfast and you could get coffee and juice for a price.
The toilets could have been nicer I like the idea of a shower on a train I don’t understand why you don’t see more of that In Thailand they have showers in the first class
Everyone that I talked too warned about watching your small bags on the train as they will disappear in the night they suggested that I sleep with my computer. If you have a window seat you can get your bag next to your leg which worked fine for me . I was waking up at every stop to make sure that my luggage in the overhead racks did not go missing. I might add that it was real easy to wake up at every stop as they had annoying salesmen singing out to get you to buy there stuff sometimes two or three of them would sing in turns for the entire stop which might be 10 minutes very annoying.
Trains are attractive anywhere if you have lots of luggage today with the airlines looking to save fuel or raise revenues luggage is a good place to start with the cheap flights in Asia being the first to see Asian discount airfares go higher . In Indonesia the airlines all have different rates for luggage and it can be quite expensive if your hobby or sport includes heavy equipment like mine which is scuba diving my dive gear alone weights in at 13 kilos and that is the bare minimum that I can get away with if I plan to use all my own dive gear..
