San Jose Budget Accommodation Costa Rica
For budget accommodations in Downtown San Jose there really are not a lot of choices. We looked on line at the Hotel Europa and took a pass then when we came back to San Jose from Jaco Beach we had no choice either here or the Hotel Presidential or the Hotel Bamoral both of which for last minute reservations from a walk in are over $100 a night and just like in science Eureka moments are rare and you just get lucky the bellman at the hotel Morazon pushed the Europe hard and I am glad that he did!
We had a large room with WiFi the first night that we were there. The room was very comfortable and very quiet for being in such an active part of Downtown San Jose. The bed was very large and comfortable and there was also allot of storage space as well as countertop.
The only negative of the room was that the bathroom was totally outdated and ready for a remodel. It did have a large shower and the hot water was adequate. The cable tv we felt could have had a few more English stations and just having Spanish CNN right during the Egyptian mess was a bit of a bummer. There was also 2 free computers in lobby which was a plus as you were waiting for rides or tours you could surf or check email.
The staff was plentiful and helpful and we did not need to wait very long for anything. We booked a tour from there to see the coffee plantation crater and the rainforest where they have a menagerie of birds frogs cats and other wildlife that was fun to see. We felt that we were charge a little bit to much but we always feel that way as we are Cheap Charley in the flesh!
If you must find a cheap hotel you are going to end up at a hostel or in a very bad neighborhood. their were some hostels and very small rooms available near the bus station.
The heart of Central America San Jose Costa Rica is a historic city with a bustling downtown section. The traffic is not as bad as one would expect for as many people as around. The architecture has some interesting lines on some of the old building but otherwise is pretty standard. As it is an old city some of the buildings are quite run down.
Hotels, cheap guesthouse and budget accommodation seem to be fairly high priced. We looked at several different places and settled on something at $50 that for the money seemed a bit off the mark. We like to compare to Asia and Bangkok in particular this hotel would have been in $30 range for the amenities. We also stayed at a $100 hotel that would have been a international 4 star.in the Suhkumvit Bangkok Area like the Landmark Hotel.
Flights to San Jose were the one saving grace you can get here from most of the United States for $500 to $700 with some of the cheapest flights as low as $200 if you are in a airline feeder hub like Houston IAH. We came in from Aspen Colorado and that door to door was $700 not bad for a 3 flight trip. For the same time frame for a cheap Bangkok flight would have been $800 to $900 on China Air or Eva Air.
