The best cheap Tokyo hotel guesthouse also one of the cheapest accommodations in Tokyo was the Kimi Ryokan located near the Ikebukuro train station. This is a interesting area, not as expensive as the Ginza, but with all of the energy and allot of the shopping and night life a good area for Asia cheap travelers.
The guesthouse rooms were small and it was a communal restrooms but this was well done and was very comfortable with very snuggly bath robes and slippers provided. The beds were futon like mats with very warm and cuddly comforters. I took a friend who lives in Tokyo there and she was quite impressed with the ambiance and traditional feel of this hotel guesthouse inn in Tokyo.

Kimi Roykan which is a traditional Japanese guesthouse inn hotels. The highlight for me was the traditional wooden hot tub for a nice long soak. They also had a very friendly and attractive social scene with families and younger student types mixing comfortably in a social pit if you will pictured above.

Sakura Hotel in Tokyo Jimbocho neighborhood this cheap hotel chain is all over Tokyo I defiantly did not like the attitude that i received the first two times that I talked to a staff member they made me feel like I was wasting there time as they had more important things to do like book work If the rest of this Tokyo Cheap hotel chain is like this you would be better off giving them a miss. I have stayred in Jails that were more comfortable. They advertising everywhere and they are very good at getting you to go there getting you to stay is another matter all together.

When choosing a hotel in Tokyo you should consider the distances to the trains as this is the primary way for people to move around in Tokyo & Japan in general as traffic can be a challenge Tokyo trains are very fast and clean but as the system is very complex from Narita airport into town expect to pay less than $15USD probably more like $12 for the regular trains there is a faster train for 50% more or less.
A real budget travel buster in Tokyo is the taxis if you chose a place that is too far to walk from, the taxis are clean and friendly but not cheap.. near Narita airport in the town of Narita there are some good value cheap hotels if you are not in Tokyo long.
